I don't think people have fully grappled with what coronavirus is doing to journalism, in part because a few big orgs are still doing well. But the immune system of democracy is literally crashing before our eyes. motherjones.com/media/2020/05/…
And it's not because the internet happened, or any of the other facile explanations. It's a lot simpler and more infuriating than that. One word: Greed. Two words: Hedge funds.
"The profit is the product," one news union leader said about hedge funds. And what else has been wrecked by that principle? So many companies you might have shopped (or worked) at: Payless, ToysRUs, Sears. Brads that needed to evolve, but got gutted instead. And it gets worse:

Profit-taking run amok is underneath so many of the disasters we're facing now. It starved the institutions we needed to confront the pandemic, and it's warping our response now that the calamity is here. I see it up close in media, but it's everywhere. motherjones.com/media/2020/05/…
