Just in from an advocate in Texas: A 61 y/o man caged in Smith County Jail died of COVID. Didn't tell his family when hospitalized. Didn't tell them when he died. Didn't tell them until they completed the autopsy. Called them at 5am this morning. No humanity. Only cruelty.
Here are today’s numbers from Texas County Jails (mostly pretrial):
And now reading another text from the sister of a 51 year old man who died from COVID-19 in a jail in Florida. Also not informed of his condition either in jail or once transferred to ICU. She too found out when she got a call from the medical examiner.

Meet Katherine Fernandez Rundle. Miami’s top prosecutor for 28 years. She’s enabling an outbreak in Miami jails. In last month: 0 to 481 infections. In last month: jail population stayed the same (3000). Refuses even to release a paraplegic man w/ COVID to his parents. Cruelty:
Rundle is the same top prosecutor who refused to prosecute 4 prison guards who locked Darren Rainey, inside a running hot shower for nearly 2 hours, boiling his internal organs, killing him. It was on video. She’s also never charged an on-duty officer for killing someone.
When pressed and challenged publicly about her refusal to charge the prison guards, Katherine Fernandez Rundle referred to the community protests and concern over the case as “mob mentality.”

Read this. Read it again. On May 5, 2 cruel federal appellate judges, more concerned about inconveniencing a city jail by requiring them to provide basic sanitation & health to people in jail, let them off the hook. 9 days later, 481 tested positive. 41% of total population.
By May 5, 2020, the date of the decision, Charles Hobbs had already died. Suffocated on the floor of COVID-only cell. Ignored. 163 people had already tested positive. And the jail had already ignored the earlier court order requiring them to provide soap. miamiherald.com/news/local/com…
