Hey Dr. @darakass - the climate science community has been dealing with this for decades (and you have our full sympathy and support). There are some techniques that have been broadly adopted, for example (1/n)
Recognize the telltale techniques of science denial - many of these are similar between climate and COVID19. See work by @ProfMarkMaslin @GeraldKutney @MichaelEMann @KHayhoe and @UCSUSA such as this… and this… (2/n)
Directly address the lies and intentional attempts at misinformation -great examples here by @KHayhoe in her #GlobalWeirding episodes, but also see resources from @UCSUSA, and #ClimateBrawl by @GeraldKutney (3/n)…
Centralize the importance of understanding (and acknowledging) people's emotions about complex and challenging topics - great examples on climate, fire, flood by @reneelertzman and @frkearns, for example this article by Dr. Lertzman… (4/n)
Similarly, center the impacts on marginalized groups and speak directly to people's values, worries, deepest fears and biggest hopes - great examples by @ayanaeliza @SarahEMyhre @MaryHeglar… (5/n)
While we can chat about this on Twitter, the key to facing big challenges like COVID19 & climate is relationship building -and building skills in relational practices- something that we mostly do in F2F interactions. Great advice here by Dr.@frkearns… (6/n)
#ClimateChange community, please add to this thread?
Since both @TrevorABranch and @KHayhoe pointed this out - I'll add a resource to the thread here based upon work by @STWorg, @johnfocook and colleagues, who have been providing info on debunking conspiracy theories on science for a while!
