The Cities We Need in today’s @NYTimes Sunday Review is particularly good. I am struck most by this chart. Some people get so angry when I say class struggles that don’t address the way class is racialized will simply leave inequality intact. Look at diff bw black/white poor.
While poverty is always terrible, White people, overall, experience poverty in a distinctly different way than black Americans. Most poor white people live in middle-class neighborhoods and attend middle-class schools. The opposite is true for most poor black children.
In fact, as I’ve said again and again, the average middle-income black family lives in a poorer neighborhood than the average poor white family. Race in Americas is and has always been a distinct, generational, web of disadvantage regardless of income.
Damn. Put the wrong graphic, but study that one, too. Here’s the correct one.
