This @EricLevitz review of "Why We're Polarized" is very sharp. nymag.com/intelligencer/…
One thing I want to write more on is a tension he points out in the book: Polarization is both a political dynamic and a problem bedeviling our political system, and I'm trying to show both. He's right that that muddles the conversation, but it's because the reality is muddled.
The word "polarization" is just used to describe too much. In the book I try to pull apart different kinds of polarization, and the way different institutions interact with polarization, but the word itself is an enemy of clarity. It means too much to too many.
I had high hopes to write more about all this. You think you've finished a book, but book tour shows you how unfinished your book is, and how much more there is to unpack and struggle with. But then coronavirus happened, and well, you know.
