NEW: NYC Health Dept has published, for first time, data on covid-19 death rate by zip code.

Confirms dramatic inequality, with death rate in low-income communities of color more than ten times greater than wealthier ares.

It’s time to update the all-or-nothing messaging on Covid-19 risk.

Let’s give people the tools to understand that the riskiness of social activities lies on a spectrum.

We are staring quarantine fatigue in the face. We need new guidance--and policies--to meet this challenge. 1/
Strict sheltering at home in NY over the past two months succeeded, against the odds, in flattening the curve enough to prevent our hospital system from breaking at the apex. This avoided untold suffering. 2/
The risk of a rebound still looms, so we need to continue extraordinary measures to ensure physical distancing for the foreseeable future. 3/

NYC will soon start a massive program to trace the contacts of people with coronavirus.

This will impact NYers in profound and personal ways. It raises a huge number of questions--about privacy, enforcement, equity and much more.

Here are some answers. 1/
Will everyone who tests positive in NYC need to talk to a contact tracer?
* Yes, that’s how this works 2/
So I’ll have to tell them everyone I’ve been in contact with? Even walked by in the street? How far back in time?
* Tracers will only focus on sustained contacts--say 15 minutes or more. Ideally they will look back 14 days, which is the incubation time of the virus. 3/

NYC is now doing something really big: offering hotel rooms to people with mild/mod covid-19 who need to relocate in order to keep their household from being infected.

Patients need to be referred by one of the below health providers. This is an early phase and will be expanded.
Patients will be provided with food, pharmacy, and laundry while in the hotel. There is a small clinical staff in each hotel, including EMTs, which checks in on patients daily and is on site in case of emergencies. For obvious reasons no visitors are allowed.
