For no reason, I tried to push myself and generate a pattern everyday for one month in a hand drawn style. To add difficulty I chose to learn a tool I never tried : #substance designer.
Quite a learning journey.
Here’s a selection!

So every time I’m in this situation I try to set small goals and reuse what I learn and more importantly : stick to it. It’s more of a cumulative learning than learning something new every single day.
I find most of what I need on Youtube and the official documentation (RTFM, right?)
The first week is always the most intense to me as I try to wrap my ideas around a new beast. It can be quite frustrating to not get the result I want.
Again, sticking to my strategy paid off on the long run.
Also, I started to get the workflow with the tool and make reusable components.
The nodal approach to create images is so good, it hurts.
Can be overwhelming at first sight but really it all makes sense once you get it.
If I get it right, the process is all about building simple shapes/patterns to build a complex one.
I definitely agree I could optimize things here and there 😄
So... I installed Houdini.
It scared me out.
Uninstalled 😂
Maybe I should give another try…
But for sure, this won’t be a piece of cake!
Hope you enjoyed the monologue.
Cheers and take care! 🖖🏾
