To kick off Day 51 of #MuseumsUnlocked (Thurs 21 May) on BELGIUM AND THE NETHERLANDS—some of the 9,500 artefacts excavated when the new Amsterdam Metro was built, and since 2018 permanently displayed in vitrines by the escalators at the new Rokin metro station #MuseumsUnlocked

.@maitlis's new BBC doc about Dominic Cummings discusses his 2005 paper "How Demographic Decline...will sink the European Dream". I idly dug out a copy and it turns out it's quite a terrifying read 15 years on: fantasies about aging populations; about eugenics "re-emerging" (1/3)
(2/3) about pension liabilities. birth rates, and fertility; about "the sort of systemic crisis unleashed by 1929 sweeping civilised government off the European map"; about "a deliberate long-term campaign to alter the moral assumptions of the intelligentsia";
(3/3) about "Muslim immigration"; about "Nietzsche’s predictions for the future western intelligentsia and their role in the collapse of liberal democracy" read through Francis Fukuyama, etc, etc

Five hundred million animals will be killed by the Australian fires. Several plant and animal species are expected to be made extinct through this event. Climate change and the erasure of Indigenous land management practices have a common root in ongoing extractivist colonialism.
Perhaps a new war for oil. Looking ahead to the coming crucial decade we might all reflect on how our expertise could possibly add to understanding. Those of us working on material culture brought to western museums work on the ongoing effects of extractive corporate colonialism.
So in framing our research in the 2020s, would it be possible to bring an anthropological-archaeological perspective to how we might comprehend the contemporary processes of violent dispossession, environmental loss, the end of worlds, began for the Global South many years ago?
