I do think it’s important not to underestimate Trump, but that doesn’t have anything to do with his being smart. It has to do with him being cruel and shameless and white and rich in a society that has clearly been optimized to benefit white rich cruel shamelessness.
Don’t underestimate his willingness to do something unimaginably cruel and shameless to stay in power, and don’t underestimate the ability of most comfortable white people (which is what I am) to find themselves unwilling to make him pay for it, no matter how stupidly he does it.
