Mansa Musa conquered 24 cities in present day Mali and Mauritania. He made Mali the world's largest producer of gold. He established Africa's largest collections of books since the Library of Alexandria at at Sankoré University. The university could house 25,000 students.
Sankore University, Mali had one of the world's largest libraries with 1,000,000 manuscripts. Mansa built a mosque every Friday.

He commissioned The Djinguereber Mosque in 1327. He gave so much gold to poor people in Cairo, Egypt that it caused a 12-year long inflation.
Mansa Musa's descendants squandered his $400 billion fortune. His grandson particularly couldn't protect the territory he left behind, lost battles and most of his gold reserves were lost. The Portuguese invaded the Malian Empire in the 15th century.
