India was expected to lead in Robotics because of our early advances in IT during 90s, however we failed to develop expertise in AI, natural language processing, etc. Now it is time catch-up. (Thread) 1/8
China leads robotic sales worldwide and accounts for about 40% in 2019 according to the International Federation of Robots. South Korea, Japan, and the U.S. follow next respectively. Robotics has been mentioned as a priority in India but failed to implement any policy or plan.2/8
Robotics can alter traditional supply chains soon. It is already affecting service jobs, healthcare and geopolitics in other nations, and India is yet to come up with a vision on how it will integrate robotics, AI, and other technologies to its traditional businesses. 3/8
We should start working on this soon else we lose millions of jobs to automation. This is not something farfetched. If we look at the last few years, we have only been able to create 2% of the job demand. We need policies for immediate implementation to re-skill our workforce.4/8
The worst sector that will be affected due to automation is outsourcing. IT outsourcing employs over 3 million people. A survey predicted that 21% of IT labour may lose their jobs to automation by the year 2021. This is approximately 6,40,000 jobs! 5/8
Everybody talks about India’s potential in technology and now it is time to put that in action. We need to work on the hardware ecosystem, give Financial incentives to the sector, upskill our human resources & most importantly change our mindset to progress. 6/8
India is already leading in robotics in aerospace and healthcare with its 3D printing techniques which it could use for its competitive advantage. We should also invest in robotic studies, technology, research, and the development of potential applications of robotics. 7/8
In the age of self-driving cars, a robot with intelligence and voice commands doing our chores, robotics and automation are no longer just sci-fi movie scenes. This is our reality; this is our present and we need to gear up and adopt it before we get way behind in the race. 8/8
