The following plea was posted yesterday in a private Facebook page for Arizona correctional officers - it tells the real story of the staffing shortages in the Department of Corrections right now:

"I want to reach out to as many ADOC staff as I can and ask for help"
"We are running at extremely low staffing levels. Part of the problem is all of the hospital coverages costing the units precious staff. If you are able to, if you have the free time, if you are a work horse . . .
"if you are a warrior or if you are like me and it kills you to watch your staff do double and triple the work; I ask you to please at least consider signing up for some OT. I guarantee that at least at Eyman you can show up and we will put you to work no matter the day or shift"
"If you get turned away for any reason, walk into Rynning unit and you will 100% be welcome. If you want to sign up for hospital coverage, call Eyman complex and speak to the shift commander on day shift 7 days a week."
"If there are openings and you are off probation and have a valid weapons card, I am sure that they will put you on the schedule."
And then some of the comments:

"It's by far the worst I've seen it in my 9 years."

"Pray for all of us"

"I see the flaws in the department, but I love my job, I am loyal to the department and my staff mean more to me than they will ever know."
"At what point do we say we cannot function?"

"I work as much as I can it would pain me to know I could have been there to help when somebody else got hurt"

"I do 60-70 hours a week and it’s still not enough. We are really at our breaking point"
"I had worked alot and I mean maxing out on a regular basis for years. Some staff couldn't figure out what shift I was actually assigned. I started realizing little things about myself such as forgetful, overlooking things, etc."
"For personal reasons I had to stop ot for a while (which was quite a negative impact to my financial situation). I stopped for 4 months. During that time I was able to see how out of it I had become."
"I'm pretty sure there are many who go, go, go to the point they're on autopilot and don't even realize the impact on their mental state. We need to take care of ourselves or we will be no good to anyone."
