A truly odd comment at the press conference this evening, given that it's not winter.

But of course if someone reads it quickly, they may think that the *total* death toll is the same as in an average winter, which is a different story entirely. The death rate is the number of new deaths per week, not the total number of deaths across the whole pandemic.
It's like saying "this banana weighs the same as an average grape".
