The first four months of this year have already witnessed 170 Chinese transgressions across the LAC, including 130 in Ladakh. There were only 110 transgressions recorded in Ladakh during the same period in 2019. 2/n
There was a 75% surge in the Chinese transgressions in Ladakh in 2019 – 497 compared to 284 transgressions in 2018. Overall, there were 663 recorded Chinese transgressions in 2019 across the disputed India-China border, rising from only 404 transgressions in 2018. 3/n
In contrast, the number of Chinese transgressions across the LAC in 2018 had declined by 15% across the LAC over 2017: a decline of 16% and 25% across western and eastern sectors respectively. Modi and Xi had met for their first informal summit at Wuhan in April 2018 4/n
2019 also recorded the highest number of aerial transgressions by the Chinese soldiers, 108 of them - compared to only 78 in 2018 and 47 in 2017. A majority of aerial transgressions are recorded in the eastern sector: 64 of 108 in 2019, and 42 of 78 in 2018. 5/n
Nearly three-quarters of the transgressions, data from 2015 shows, have taken place in western sector of LAC, which falls in Ladakh. The eastern sector, which falls in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, has witnessed around one-fifth of the transgressions by the Chinese soldiers. 6/n
Of course, Chinese transgressions occur because both sides do not agree on the LAC, which is neither clarified nor confirmed by the two countries. But they are still an indicator of more Chinese patrolling, and a greater assertion, though Indians are registering these too. n/n
