As Twitter last week became the 1st co to announce permanent remote work, several 1st/2nd order effects were assessed (SF real estate $, 🚗traffic, rental $ in Tier2 cities, etc). Now as Square, Facebook, Shopify follow suit, it would be interesting to see other effects👇
1/10
1a/ Temp workers outnumber full time workers in several tech cos inc the likes of Google. Several temp workers are blue collar workers (cooks, janitors, guards) at massive silicon valley campuses. As WFH becomes permanent, demand for such blue collar workers will decrease
2/10
1b/ Not surprisingly, minority groups have a disproportionately large representation here- while 10% of tech workers in SF are Black/Latino, ~60% of blue collar workers in tech cos are Black/Latino➡️high risk of widening an already wide income gap

2a/ My 1st few friends when I briefly moved to Vancouver alone in '18 were coworkers I bumped into near the coffee machine. They went on to become lifelong friends& peer influences. WFH comes in the way of crucial personality & relationship forming- esp for younger employees
4/10
2b/ A natural effect of workplace socializing is innovative ideas, constructive sparring, peer learning. The 4pm chai & poha at Blume is (in)famous for long discussions on new biz models &untapped sectors. Wld be interesting to see how cos use tech to replace these organic setups
2c/ With the decrease in workplace networking, we could expect an increase in non-workplace networking. Indian plays like @LeapClub1 & @IvyPlusNetwork come to mind. Would be interesting to see how some of them think of monetizing their B2C users going forward
6/10
3/ The role of gender (and sexism) in workplaces - harassment, inherent biases in meetings, cliques, "locker room talk", focus on physical appearances, or even pressures of balancing kids & work - might all change (& hopefully reduce?) as workplaces go virtual
7/10
4a/ Remote work will cause increased "locational fluidity" among white collar immigrant workers (my attempt at jargon creation🤷‍♀️) - since they can now choose to work from either country / make longer trips to their home countries with working remotely
8/10
4b/ This creates fuzzy areas in immigration & compensation. Will H1b rules apply to such workers? Do they need work permits? Where do they pay taxes? Key Q - how will companies who currently have diff pay scales for diff country offices think of salaries for remote workers?
9/10
PS/ I read somewhere that Twitter was also the 1st co to not allow editing of posts once they had been posted. Definitely not a trend I liked... Let's see how this one pans out🤷‍♀️🤔
