Sir Ian Boyd (SAGE): "Acting very early was really important and I would have loved to have seen us acting a week or two weeks earlier and it would have made quite a big difference to the steepness of the curve of infection and therefore the death rate."

The infection was doubling every 3 days. So in one week, the number of infected people went up over 4x.

In other words, by acting a week earlier we'd have had only a quarter of the number of infections and deaths.

Based on ONS figures, over 30,000 people would still be alive.
Another way of looking at those stats: Boris Johnson has been alive for 20,426 days so far.

That means his dither and delay have cost the lives of 1.5 people for every single day he's been on this planet.
