This group is the modern-day version of "Parents and Taxpayers," a coalition that emerged in early 1960s New York City to oppose school integration plans.

PLACE formed recently in response to community efforts to integrate schools. (1/8)
"By calling themselves Parents and Taxpayers, these white protestors made an implicit claim that they occupied a higher level of citizenship than black and Puerto Rican New Yorkers who were also parents and taxpayers."
@mattdelmont

"Real parents" is even more brazen. (2/8)
In 1964 PAT wanted to keep "neighborhood schools."

In 2020, under a school choice system, PLACE wants to keep "screened schools." In District 2, where many PLACE leaders are from, they want both: academic screens and priority for certain zip codes. (3/8)
PAT accused city leaders of "inverse discrimination" and "educational dictatorship."

PLACE leaders have been unrelenting in accusing Chancellor Carranza of racism for his efforts to integrate schools and expand culturally responsive education & implicit bias training. (4/8)
Even though they opposed every conceivable strategy to integrate schools, PAT insisted that they did not oppose the principle of school integration.

PLACE leaders use the same playbook today. One of them, CEC2 Pres. Maud Maron is even on an integration working group. (5/8)
Groups like PAT & PLACE are impediments to school integration and equity, but ultimately they are playing by the rules set by city and school officials.

The true opponent is @NYCMayor and all of his predecessors who've catered to groups like PLACE for decades. (6/8)
It's disheartening to watch @NYCMayor's 6.5 yrs of inaction despite so many leaders around him who want change and know a better way.

@DOEChancellor @joshwallacknyc @LRobinsonNYC @UrsulinaR @BrandonCardet @KenyatteReid @SADYELCAMPOAMOR @MarkTreyger718 @bradlander (7/8)
Not to mention the waves of student and adult leaders who have been demanding integration and equity for yrs.

@NYCMayor has a chance right now to end admissions "screens" and put us on a course to the fair, equitable city he talks about a lot but that we have never seen. (8/8)
