Last week's thread (linked below) looked at mail-in ballot numbers by county and party. I do these threads as an exercise for various data analysis and viz tools, and I wanted to do another one that goes a little deeper into those numbers. bit.ly/2TAB3Or 1/
I'm using tableau for the data viz this time, rather than the Python Matplotlib module. As of May 23, between 10% and 30% of voters in each county have requeted a mail in ballot for the June 2 primary (Ballots requested/Total Voters by county) 2/
While more than 1.5 million voters have received a mail-in ballot, some counties (like Bucks) have seen less than 1% of them returned. Some have seen over 50% returned (like Union County). 3/
Not much has changed since last week as far as the party breakdown by county. More Democrats than Republicans have asked for ballots overall. Republicans tend to lead in the central and northern parts of the state 4/
Republicans, however, have so far cast more ballots than Democrats in most counties. Comparing percentages of returned ballots by party and county, Bucks Dems have returned 3.34% more ballots than Republicans, though only 344 ballots total have been returned. 5/
While this is all interesting to me, the races in the upcoming primary aren't really at the county level. About 15% to 30% of voters in most state House districts have requested mail-in ballots. About a dozen districts have fewer than 10% of voters requesting ballots. /6
Similar to our county numbers, southeast PA districts have the lowest overall percentages for ballots returned - ranging between .09% to just under 13% of ballots cast by mail. Every house district has between ~35,000 to ~50,000 voters each /7
About 10% to 27% of voters by state Senate district have requested mail-in ballots. Total voters in state Senate districts range between about 140,000 to 200,000 voters in the 50 districts. 8/
Much like the state House ballots, the majority of returned ballots are outside of southeastern PA. Bucks County has the lowest returned ballots, with districts 10 and 12 returning less than 1% of ballots requested so far. 9/
There are more than 200 House districts. Republicans have some of their strongest leads in the northern and central parts of the state as far as total voters go. Dems tend to have the most voters in metro areas and close suburban communities. 10/
All of this data is from the @PAStateDept website, btw. Like the county breakdown, Democratic voters make up the most of the ballots requested by state House district ... 11/
As well as in most of the 50 state Senate districts ... 12/
But more Republicans have returned their ballots already in the House ... 13/
And in most of the state Senate as well. Of course, we're also talking about a primary here, so I think of the party breakdowns at this point as more like trivia. 14/
I'll try and get the congressional districts up in the near future. Total voter data is from the state total voter export taken April 27 and ballot data available at data.pa.gov. Tableau dashboard links here: tabsoft.co/36viQXw tabsoft.co/2TDVvOk 15/
