1/ THREAD: Memorial Day in a Pandemic

I often struggle with #MemorialDay. With the calls for celebration and happiness on this day. For BBQs and summer fun.

Because nothing about this day is happy.

This day is about #grief. About tragedy. About #death and loss.

🇺🇸 😔 😢
2/ Above all, it is a day of RESPECT. Because Americans gave their lives in service to protect the citizens and country of the United States.

The lives they previously dreamt of were cut short. And that selfless gift of life is one of the highest honors to serve your country. Image
3/ But their husbands and wives will never kiss their spouses again. Their children will never hug their mothers or fathers again. It doesn’t change the visceral grief of parents losing their children to #prematuredeath. #memorialdayweekend2020 Image
4/ Myeshia Johnson sobs over the casket of fallen #soldier and husband, Sgt. La David Johnson, who was killed in Niger.… Image
5/ The 1984 Pulitzer Prize winning photograph “#MemorialDay” taken by Anthony Suau is an iconic image of #American #patriotism and grief of the loss of a loved one from war. The photograph depicts women grieving over her husband who was a war #veteran.

🇺🇸 #MemorialDay2020 #USA Image
6/ My heart grieves for her and the many Americans also grieving.

RT @CoachGeneChizik

🇺🇸 ❤️ 😢
7/ The painting “Reflections” by Lee Teter 1988 shows a former Vietnam War #veteran paying his tributes to his fallen comrades at the National #Vietnam #Memorial in Washington D.C. RT @THEANTHEMGIRL
8/ Indeed our freedom is not free.

In fact, the true cost of the freedoms enjoyed by US citizens is the death of brave #American soldiers. RT @NeshaminySkins

🇺🇸 #memorialdayweekend2020 #MemorialDayWeekend
9/ Memorial Day was born after the #American Civil War, when the US was faced with the task of burying and honoring the 600,000-800,000 Union and Confederate #soldiers who died in the single bloodiest military conflict in American history. RT @QasimRashid
10/ By the end of this week, the US casualties from #COVIDー19 will exceed 105,771, the combined sum of all #American military deaths since the Korean War...

#COVID #SARS_CoV_2 #USA #MemorialDayWeekend 🇺🇸 🦠

11/ 100,000 American deaths listed in the @nytimes:
“The names go for 4 pages...”

So terrible. So Preventable. @realDonaldTrump could have prevented this disaster, he had the power. He did not. Instead he played golf. RT @AndrewSolender #COVID #Covid_19 Image
12/ 100K #Americans have died due to the negligence and delayed response of the federal government.
Trump is not a dictator.

All politicians & officials who have done nothing to protect American citizens and continue to ignore science are complicit in this preventable tragedy. Image
13/ Please also remember Dr. Wenliang Li the 30yo Chinese ophthalmologist who died of #Covid_19 leaving his wife and infant. He was the initial whistleblower of the another “SARS-like” illness but was arrested, shamed, and silenced. 🦠 RT @LeMeTellUSumtin
14/ There was also an amazing and heart-wrenching post on a #Covid_19 MD/APP Facebook group listing healthcare professionals who have died from infections with #SARS_CoV_2

@drjessigold @choo_ek @darakass @ScottGottliebMD @ASlavitt @jmugele @tmprowell… Image
15/ Twitter post interrupted by manuscripts and toddler watching...

Back to #MemorialDay, and remembering the #soldiers in our military who died for our freedoms.

And our AMAZING frontline healthcare professionals currently battling #COVID19. We must remember them too.
16/ We must remember that the *war* and *hero* messaging is deliberate.

Healthcare workers are some of the most trusted professions that exist

And yet, #America has failed to protect and support them and provide them with essential & necessary equipment to do their jobs.
17/ Because of these massive government and systemic failures and inaction, healthcare professionals have died.

Unlike war, these deaths were preventable with proper action and equipment.

Calling them *heroes* in a *war* make these avoidable deaths ACCEPTABLE to the public.
18/ The fact that death was avoidable, does not make their sacrifice any less honorable.

They knew they didn't have the proper support or equipment, and yet patients needed them.

19/ So, how should the public honor HCW who have died from #COVID19?
Wear a mask in public --> this protects others from you (you may be asymptomatic)
Social distance & wash your hands --> this does protect you

Hundreds of partygoers at the Lake of the #Ozarks in #Missouri with little thought to #socialdistancing as they packed into a pool and bar to celebrate #MemorialDay weekend at an event named ‘Zero Ducks Given’. 🦆… Image
21/ OR THIS:

Hundreds of demonstrators and #armed protesters rallied in the state capitol building against #Michigan 's coronavirus lockdown.  Many did not wear #masks or socially distance. #MichiganTerrorists 😔 😷… Image
22/ OR THIS:

Protester in #Denver wearing a #USA shirt and leaning out of the passenger window of a pickup truck, yelled "Land of the free. Go to #China if you want communism," she said to the healthcare professional standing in front of her. 😷 👨‍⚕️ 🇺🇸… Image
23/ OR THIS:

Hundreds of people gathered outside of the #Massachusetts State House on Monday calling for the end to restrictions designed to slow the spread of the #coronavirus. Most not wearing #masks or #socialdistancing.

Nazi slogan from sign above Auschwitz death camp: "Work will set you Free" displayed by protester at 're-open Illinois' rally directed toward Gov. J.B. Pritzker (who is Jewish) @AuschwitzMuseum Image

There are enough issues regarding our lack of national response to actually be angry about. This anger needs channeled to incite government & policy change, not conspiracy theories. RT @MamaDoctorJones 😡
26/ 100K Americans have died due to the negligence of Trump, but also all of the politicians and government officials who have done nothing to protect US citizens and continue to ignore science.

Trump is not a dictator.  They are all complicit. @Yamiche

27/ Just 1 month ago, @VP @Mike_Pence told the American people that #COVID19 would be over by #MemorialDay RT @davidaxelrod 🦠 😷 😡
28/   Even in chaos, there are people doing good #TheBestofUs. There are always helpers @FredRogersPro.

Despite everything that has happened, I am still hopeful.

I believe the devastation with the #USA #pandemic can be a true catalyst for change.

@tmprowell @AlexAndersonMD
29/ I remember how those poor babies were gunned down at @sandyhook but our firearms laws, regulations, registration, and levels of gun violence/mass shootings remained largely unchanged.

I remember thinking how if #murdering #children doesn't change policy, what on Earth will? Image
30/ Maybe #COVID19 will finally change the #USA.
I am cautiously optimistic for our new future and new "normal" that the world will build together during and after the pandemic.
