This morning Mel and I went to a pre-arranged spot in Riverside Park and sat down on a picnic blanket and a few minutes later a pair of friends who also live together arrived and sat down on another picnic blanket ten feet away and we passed a very lovely very safe hour together.
It took multiple text conversations and a FaceTime chat to set up, and we all assessed risk along about seven different axes before doing it, but it's not something any of us would have felt comfortable doing a month ago.
There are elements of emerging from lockdown that involve managing risk, but there are other elements that involve deploying what we've learned about the virus to enable us to do things safely that we didn't know how to do safely in March and April.
