A class-action lawsuit trying to get COVID-vulnerable inmates released from the MCC, Manhattan's federal jail, has now produced a string of inmate declarations.
Here, Cesar Fernandez-Rodriguez describes being on 23-hour a day lock down w/a shower every 3 days to limit exposure.
Vinicius Andrade says he was taken to the hospital w/a 104.8 degree fever, tested positive & was sent back to MCC.
He claims he was placed in a cell w/a concrete bed w/no sheets or blankets and lay on the concrete shaking.
Armando Beniquez couldn't get medical attention even tho he says his roomie fell ill & he felt symptoms of the virus. He says he asked to see a doctor "between 23 and 30 times" to no avail.
Michael Falu was "almost certain" he had it too: chills, sweats, cough "like no other," loss of smell and taste.
It took days for him get a medical appointment. The doctor proscribed meds for constipation and fever, he says.
Adriene Roberts's cellmate came down w/symptoms and she was terrified. In a panic to get out, she hung a bed sheet in the cell making it look like she might kill herself.
The guards put her in isolation for 16 days. When she spiked a fever, she says she was given Tylenol.
Jail officials say no one has died at MCC, which lawyers for the inmates call "a small miracle."
The US govt has moved to dismiss. A similar case trying to free inmates from Fort Dix in NJ was recently dismissed. There's also a case trying to free Brooklyn federal inmates.
