Twitter allows you to connect with people that otherwise would be impossible.
I cannot overstate how magical that is.
Twitter is a key that unlocks thousands of doors, some of which you never even knew existed.
The best part about putting yourself out there on Twitter isn’t getting more followers, it’s meeting interesting people.
Tweet the right stuff and eventually the right people find you.
Twitter is a meritocracy of ideas.
It doesn’t matter where you live, who you know, or even if you’re profile is anonymous.
You can build a network of likeminded people through the consistent articulation of your unique perspective.
If you’re seeing this tweet in your newsfeed, Twitter thinks it’s something you would read.
If you’re reading this, they were right.
If you want to understand something better, tweet about it.
When I come across a new idea that resonates with me, I apply it to my own life.
Then I synthesize it and tweet it. That’s it.
The real Twitter hack is to tweet about things you’re passionate about.
Tweet things that make people feel things.
If you spend your time on Twitter talking about marketing, I can promise you that you’re an above average marketer.
The world’s most important people are all on Twitter.
And anyone that might be insulted by this won’t ever see it anyways.
If you’re new in town you can’t throw a party & just magically expect people to show up.
You don’t even have anyone to invite yet
But you can go to someone else’s party & say interesting things to people to make new friends.
This is how replying to people on Twitter works.
The key to getting more followers:
When someone first comes across your profile they intuitively assess what’s in it for them.
You grow your following by clearly conveying how your profile might be useful, either explicitly or implicitly.
I use my Twitter bio to explain what someone can expect to see if they follow me.
I use my pinned tweet as an extension of my bio.
This is the most valuable real estate on your Twitter profile, use it accordingly.
Cheatsheet for writing better tweets:
• One idea per tweet
• Write for clarity first
• Write for wit second
• Delete superfluous words
• Use analogies when possible
• Bad formatting can ruin a great tweet
Your job is to collect ideas.
Collect so many ideas that some of the ideas you thought were unrelated fuse together to form brand new ideas.
One of the best skills you can ever develop:
The ability to recognize quality thinking in other people.
Don’t focus on creating perfect content.
Focus on creating relevant content.
The best way to think new thoughts is to deliberately set aside time for thinking new thoughts.
The best way to learn something is to do it, then to teach it.
There’s no such thing as an original idea.
Everything is a remix of a remix of a remix.
Twitter is better at making you think.
Instagram is better at making you feel.
The reason why Instagram has more users than Twitter:
It’s easier to post a photo than an idea.
Two of my favorite things about Instagram: No links. No sharing.
People underestimate how dramatic these two decisions were in shaping our behavior on the platform.
There are two types of social media advice:
The stuff that used to work & the stuff that currently works
The stuff that used to work comes up in google searches because it’s the oldest. The stuff that currently works is mostly found only by example on platforms themselves.
Of all the social media advice I give, there’s one key component that I often leave out.
And it’s an essential ingredient in all social media success:
The content actually needs to be good.
Without quality, everything else is moot.
The best social media marketing doesn’t feel like marketing.
Organic social media marketing works like word of mouth marketing:
Provide such an outstanding experience that people willingly share it with everyone they know.
The more you brand something on social media, the more it looks like an ad.
The more something on social media looks like an ad, the less willing people are to share it.
Communication is less about adding things,
and more about ruthlessly subtracting every single element that fails to increase the clarity of your message.
The secret to writing effective social media copy:
Social media is a light medium, so write casually. Write like you’re texting a friend. Write like you’re explaining something over a beer. Write like you’re telling your mom. That’s it. That’s the secret. Write it casually.
The one thing that all great marketing has in common regardless of the medium or platform: creativity.
We operate more on feelings and emotions than facts and rationales.
Keep this in mind when you’re trying to persuade someone of something.
Each platform described in 2 words:
Twitter: Synthesized ideas
Instagram: Aesthetic beauty
Pinterest: Discover inspiration
YouTube: Endless entertainment
TikTok: Clever irreverence
Snapchat: Unfiltered friendship
LinkedIn: Professional connections
