1/ I’m not interested in making films to knock other films. I’m about the characters & examining them in a way that hopefully illuminates or moves you. I don’t care so much about static/gossip around other films as it distracts me from doing the best job w/ the film I’m making.
2/ Committee-made corp spectacles r part of show biz. That’s ok. Even fun. But if we’re not careful, these products anesthetize us, lock us in a homogenized consumerist dream, warm, cozy & reminds of childhood, while in the real world, our rights, nation & earth are desecrated.
That’s why sometimes i annoy some fans. But I’m not trying be antagonistic. I respect everyone. But sometimes i fear our cultish devotion as fans can unconsciously shift from a devotion to story & ideas to a devotion to a brand, a trademark. At that point we’re just tools.
