To simplify following the criminal justice news of the last 36 hours, I posted a set of 10 links to police brutality videos on Facebook

Can't do that here, obvs

So I'm putting them into a thread
[For the videos where I've changed the caption to add in "criminal justice news," you should see a clickable link under each video that will take you to the original tweet]
1️⃣ Houston TX: trampling a peaceful protestor with a horse

(If you can't control it in a crowd, you shouldn't be riding it; if you *can* control it, then the trampling was deliberate)

2️⃣ New York City, NY: Shoving an unarmed woman to the curb, prompting a seizure that put her in the emergency room

(3 different videos in this same thread with different angles of the assault)

3️⃣ New York City, NY: doing an intentional hit-and-run with a car door to an unarmed protestor standing in the non-vehicular bike lane

1️⃣6️⃣ Minneapolis, MN: police shoot a widely-known reporter in the face for sport, literally blowing apart her left eye

2️⃣0️⃣ New York City: NYPD officer (assuming a sergeant or lieutenant since he's in a white shirt?) shoving an unarmed protestor for sport

Video of 1️⃣8️⃣ above in Columbus OH

Looks like the officer throws a protestor to the ground, then another comes in to pepper-spray the Congresswoman and other elected officials

2️⃣1️⃣ Harrisburg, PA: protestors try to help someone stand up; police wait until the person is halfway up before pepper-spraying the helpers in the face for sport

This appears to be the same officer in 2️⃣2️⃣ above, licking his lips in anticipation of getting to shoot civilians

2️⃣3️⃣ Columbus, OH: Unarmed protestors peacefully chanting when officers start randomly pepper-spraying them for sport

Vids 21 and onward appear to be from today, so instead of "past 36 hours" we're in "past 48-60 hours" territory

Keep that in mind as you scroll / RT, because I know police sycophants like to insist "yOu'Re BeInG mIsLeAdInG"

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled there's a 1A right to record public police activity

Police shoot her anyway

5️⃣1️⃣ New York City, NY: NYPD officer (white shirt, higher rank of some sort) pushes a barricade into protestors, eventually knocks it over because he's a moron, then climbs over it so he can rush into the crowd to beat an unarmed woman

5️⃣2️⃣ Sacramento, CA: police shoot out a young black boy's eye for sport

5️⃣3️⃣ Louisville, KY: forgot to add this one in earlier. Police loot medical supplies, destroys others, as cops push protestors back to stop them from recording

(Next tweet in original thread below shows the protest was peaceful before this point)

Street level view of 7️⃣0️⃣ above

Closer view of 7️⃣2️⃣ above

Notice no officers wearing bodycams, and badge numbers are covered so no one can be identified

...then another officer shoots him directly in the face with a teargas canister

Notice the "PRESS" in all-caps on both sides of the reporter's vest

8️⃣7️⃣ Los Angeles, CA: LAPD shoots a man *in his own apartment* recording from his upstairs balcony

8️⃣8️⃣ Seattle, WA: SPD bike cop crashes into the back of a peaceful unarmed marcher, so other police swarm to arrest the marcher for some reason

So an officer randomly pepper-sprays her from behind

*Pike 😑

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

1️⃣0️⃣3️⃣ Boston, MA: multiple police officers beat the everlasting sh*t out of two people for sport, apparently for crossing the street?

1️⃣0️⃣4️⃣ Dallas, TX: police shoot out the eye of an unarmed black man for sport

This is at least the *4th* person whose eye has been shot out by police in the past 3 days

Google Doc spreadsheet of the thread so far; includes sortable locality info, URL, video file name, etc

1️⃣1️⃣5️⃣ Denver, CO: casual conversation between a protestor and riot cop

👤: "Can I ask you what's going to happen at 8? Sir?"

👮🏼‍♂️: "What's gonna happen is we're gonna start beating the fuck out of you."

(We don't have these in Durham NC, because people here shoot back)

1️⃣2️⃣5️⃣ Richmond, VA: another video where everything was peaceful, it wasn't curfew yet, and police started gassing everyone for sport

The Richmond VA police Twitter account has apologized for the use of tear gas in 1️⃣2️⃣2️⃣ above

They blame it on their officers' lack of tactical awareness

First-person view of 1️⃣2️⃣0️⃣ above

The DC cop punches the camera man first, before hitting him with his shield

Sh*t, you're right – thanks!

@jasonemiller: 6️⃣8️⃣ and 9️⃣7️⃣ are different videos of the same incident

1️⃣3️⃣9️⃣ Elizabethtown, NC: not a video, but the curfew proclamation for a town in rural North Carolina

Notice the first clause of Section III, outlawing alcohol possession in your home

Just a couple weeks ago, alcohol sales were an "essential service" during COVID lockdowns
(The order is unconstitutional, as many of these will turn out to be. Just sharing because Government overreach seems to be the order of the day, but for some reason it's fine now.)
1️⃣4️⃣0️⃣ Seattle, WA: overhead view of Seattle PD pepper-spraying protestors, then indiscriminately firing flash bang grenades deep into the crowd

Listen close to the officed's radio

"You should not be driving past anyone. Stop where you are, and take someone into custody."

👮🏼‍♂️👮🏼👮🏼‍♀️: ::starts shooting::

First tweet was 30 May 2020 at lunch time, covering back to May 29th then onward

So these vids cover ~4 days now (and I'm missing quite a few that are thankfully being documented by others)

Street-level view of 1️⃣4️⃣0️⃣ above in Seattle WA

The cops are rioting

[full video is 3:31 long, on IG @…]
1️⃣5️⃣4️⃣ Washington, DC: no identifiable insignia, so people don't know who to sue when they get brutalized

(Unless Under Armour became standard issue and I didn't get the memo)

1️⃣5️⃣5️⃣ El Centro, CA: police casually aiming their guns at kids recording on their phones from the roof

Just realized I used 1️⃣5️⃣4️⃣ twice 😑
We're gonna make this DC one 1️⃣5️⃣6️⃣ instead so we don't duplicate numbers on the spreadsheet

Another angle on 1️⃣5️⃣5️⃣ above

NOTE: the city on 1️⃣5️⃣5️⃣ is wrong, it's in Los Angeles but by a place called El Centro, not the El Centro city (I think?)

California geography is confusing me, sorry for the error y'all
1️⃣5️⃣7️⃣ Denver, CO: y'all have seen me tag @elisabeth a number of times over the years, who's been working with the city on police use of force.

So Denver police shot her 2x.

From behind.

1️⃣6️⃣1️⃣ Athens, GA: more indiscriminate teargas use

1️⃣6️⃣2️⃣ Walnut Creek, CA: police using teargas and bullets on a peaceful protest in broad daylight

NOTE: The thread has reached a length where Twitter's default thread-scrolling is broken

If you share the first tweet, you will *not* be able to scroll forward for more than a tweet or so (we had the same problem with the Threadnought last year)

You *can* scroll backward though
1️⃣6️⃣3️⃣ Asheville, NC: police destroy medical supplies and cut open all the water bottles

Creating a tremendous plastic mess outside of Farm Burger

1️⃣6️⃣4️⃣ New York City, NY: how many NYPD cops does it take to beat one woman?

Seems like at least 4-5 here
More on 1️⃣6️⃣3️⃣ in Asheville NC above

You can see the destruction from the rioting cops mid-video

1️⃣6️⃣5️⃣ Seattle, WA: not a brutality video, but instead showing the scale of the protestors

*Years* of data – decades likely – have repeatedly proven that crackdowns radicalize people and lead to more protestors

This is what cops rioting causes

1️⃣6️⃣6️⃣ San Diego, CA: One set of cops kettle protestors toward another set of cops, so the second set of cops can shoot them

1️⃣6️⃣7️⃣ Orlando, FL: you see a protestor in gray hoodie walking away with his hands up

3️⃣1️⃣6️⃣ Durham, NC: DPD briefly closed off a section of E Main Street (in front of their shiny and expensive new police headquarters) so protestors could do a 9-minute "die in"

But then somehow let a car slip past the barricades? 🤔

[h/t @KillaKat21]

3️⃣1️⃣8️⃣ Peoria, IL: Bill Barr's DOJ has federally charged a man for "using the internet to incite a riot"

Seems like it could set up a direct attack on Brandenburg v. Ohio? 🤔…
We've talked about Brandenburg many times, including in the thread below

It's been the constitutional standard on incitement for 50+ years

An unsympathetic defendant, like the guy in the above tweet, would typically be used to chip away at precedent

Well of course you don't; I don't either. That's where the doctrine "bad cases make bad law" comes from

But it's practically impossible to satisfy "imminence" via social media posts. It seems like the US DOJ is running this case to chip away at that

3️⃣2️⃣6️⃣ New York City, NY: same night and locale as 3️⃣2️⃣5️⃣ above I think, but really soak all of this one in as NYPD officers go out of their way to intimidate / assault / arrest people for First Amendment-protected conduct

3️⃣2️⃣7️⃣ New York City, NY: police kettle protestors into an enclosed area and then start beating them with batons – before curfew

So SJPD repaid Sanderlin by shooting him repeatedly, including in the 🍒…
Re 3️⃣1️⃣6️⃣ above out of Durham, got a DM asking why I thought DPD would deliberately do that

I *don't* think they deliberately did it; I think they were asleep at the switch (a point I thought I made in the tweet after)

Malfeasance, misfeasance, and nonfeasance can all be deadly
3️⃣3️⃣6️⃣ New York City, NY: police stop issuing press credentials to keep the reporters out

Given how many journalists they beat and shoot on air, honestly I'm surprised NYPD doesn't issue *more* credentials to have more targets

Another lawyer's view on 3️⃣1️⃣8️⃣ out of Peoria IL, re the USDOJ's "internet incitement" charge

(I think @questauthority is overly optimistic about the Feds' intent, but agree with him that the complaint itself is weak)
There's a widely-circulating video out of Richmond VA that folks say is a police officer spitting on a protestor

We haven't posted it, because it doesn't look like that to me (angle, no discernible reaction from the protestor, etc)

3️⃣3️⃣7️⃣ Lowndes County (Valdosta?), GA: the Lowndes County Sheriff *literally strangles a protestor* for having a protest sign with "FUCK TRUMP" on it

Public displays of profanity are protected speech, and have been for literal decades now

This criminal prosecution will end up dismissed, & the department likely sued

Not assigning a number to this because it was pre-protests (27 April 2020) and I'm keeping this particular thread for protest-related violence

But it's a vivid reminder of the daily police brutality that ppl didn't realize is normal

Update on 3️⃣4️⃣5️⃣ above out of Portland OR: I'm told Portland's mayor only "supported" a 30-day ban on teargas (as done in Seattle WA), but didn't actually issue an order doing so
3️⃣4️⃣7️⃣ Tulsa, OK: police open fire on protestors and shoot a reporter in the process while he's live on-air

Getting several DMs wanting to understand discrepancy in video counts across media outlets (e.g. one said 400+ when we're only at 381)

Issue is duplicate angles of same event; they're all one # on thread, but multiple rows on spreadsheet w/ cross-references
For example, the Seattle protestor who got arrested because of a Star Wars meme on Facebook has 3 different videos plus the Star Wars reference in the warrant app

So that's only 1 number here (3️⃣5️⃣3️⃣) but 4 rows on the spreadsheet
3️⃣8️⃣2️⃣ Portland, OR: this is likely the same location + time as one of earlier vids (if anyone can confirm let me know)

Photo of 4️⃣2️⃣0️⃣ in Houston – looks like an extended magazine, with a spare magazine taped on

This guy came ready to murder people

"But T. Greg," you ask, "he's not a cop so why did this get assigned number 4️⃣2️⃣0️⃣?"

Because after a week of police indiscriminately shooting unarmed and peaceful protestors, take a wild guess how they handled this guy?

4️⃣2️⃣1️⃣ New York City, NY: how many NYPD cops does it take to throw an unarmed bicyclist to the ground and beat the everlasting sh*t out of him?

I count at least 5

CORRECTION: This tweet below should have said "Seattle" like the other 4️⃣2️⃣0️⃣ entries, not Houston

Sorry for the typo 🤦‍♂️

4️⃣2️⃣2️⃣ Minneapolis, MN: remember 3️⃣8️⃣7️⃣, where MPD cops slashed people's car tires in a K-Mart parking lot?

They now admit they did it in a second area too

Police promptly beat him on arrival

Today the police chief claimed the owner was reaching for a gun

But there's video...

4️⃣2️⃣4️⃣ Seattle, WA: how many Seattle cops and National Guardsmen does it take to beat one homeless person?

Looks like at least 6 here

(I bet Seattle would save a bundle if they spent some of their teargas budget on social services that help the homeless)
4️⃣2️⃣5️⃣ Seattle, WA: police shoot someone directly in the chest with a flash-bang grenade

Another non-protest example of run-of-the-mill police brutality

Fairfax VA officer brutalizes a guy who's clearly having a mental health challenge

The officer has since been charged; the bodycam footage was released yesterday maybe?

There are 52 unique incidents of video-recorded NYPD police brutality just in this thread, most of which have multiple videos from different angles

When NYPD cops riot – acting like (taxpayer-financed) "animals and thugs" – this is the result

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes

I've gotten a number of questions about what process we're using to verify the videos that make the thread

Here's what I've been doing

➡️ If a suggested entry is from a traditional media outlet, I piggyback off them – it's presumed accurate until we learn otherwise

➡️ For new video, we check the tweet / hashtags / etc in Twitter Search to see if other people have different-but-similar tweets / photos / vids of the same area + time

(e.g. the video of the guy driving his car into the crowd in Seattle also pulls up a lot of just-text "omg this guy just drove into the crowd" tweets with Seattle geotags)

➡️ For video that seems "lonely" (no useful corroborating data comes from Twitter Search), we use Google + Google Maps + Tineye to look for corrobating stories and to verify location if possible

➡️ If there are people we know from past submissions are actually there on the ground recording, we treat them like journalists and presume they're continuing to share original media

➡️ We ignore pre-protest videos I know I've seen from working on the @fsckemall podcast

➡️ On the couple occasions where we've gotten it wrong (e.g. a video several told us was Seattle turned out to be Philadelphia; Jason noticed because the uniforms were different), we tweet out a correction quote-tweeting the original submission

It's probably not a perfect process, but the few corrections needed thus far suggests it works pretty well

It is a stupidly slow process though, which is why I'm only adding 10-20 videos a day

4️⃣3️⃣8️⃣ Fort Lauderdale, FL: police shoot a black woman in the face for sport

[CW: blood]

Interview with the woman shot in 4️⃣3️⃣8️⃣ above in Fort Lauderdale FL

My understanding is Fort Lauderdale PD's initial response to this was to imply Latoya Ratlieff was lying and to tweet a request for crowd-sourced video footage

4️⃣3️⃣9️⃣ Asbury Park, NJ: a cop manhandles a woman half his size, then his cop buddies arrest a reporter for live-streaming it

Note: New Jersey falls under the federal Third Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled in 2017 (Fields v City of Phila., 862 F3d 353) that there is a clearly established First Amendment-protected right to film police performing their duties in public

4️⃣4️⃣0️⃣ Atlanta, GA: National Guard shoving protestors over a retaining wall for sport

This is at least the 7th person blinded by police *just in this one Twitter thread*…
(The last guy I thought was #5 in the thread was actually #6 in the thread. Police are busy shooting out so many eyes I can't keep track.)
Pre-protest so not giving it a number, but just to remind y'all that the abhorrent police behavior we've seen these last two weeks is entirely normal and happens every day

Update on this unnumbered pre-protest video: the officer has finally been charged because of the social media uproar:…

The guy he was beating senseless was homeless

Another reminder that casual police violence is an everyday thing in America

Cop culture is thoroughly rotted

Update on 5️⃣4️⃣ above in Atlanta: the cops who needlessly terrorized and tazed two college students who were trying to head home – fired for excessive force – are now suing to get their jobs back…

Warren, MI: not protest-related so not assigning a number, but Warren police arrested an Amazon employee mid-delivery for the heinous crime of "parking the wrong way"

Tulsa, OK: another non-protest story so not assigning a number, but Tulsa cops grab kids from behind, tackle one to the ground, handcuff + arrest + search them, for the high crime of jaywalking

Jaywalking is often a pretext for abusing minorities

Seattle now joins Dallas TX, Denver CO, and Portland OR

4️⃣7️⃣4️⃣ Salt Lake City, UT: when police decide it's time to start making curfew arrests, they pluck a black guy from the crowd as several pin him to the ground and at least one keeps his knee on the guy's neck

4️⃣7️⃣5️⃣ East Meadow, NY: a police officer abruptly stops walking so a protestor walking behind him will bump into him, so the other police can attack and arrest him

At least 3 officers pin him down, with one keeping a knee on his neck

5️⃣0️⃣6️⃣ Minneapolis, MN: 911 dispatch knew George Floyd was being murdered as it happened

"you can call me a snitch if you want to but we have the cameras up for [squad] 320's call, and ... all of them sat on this man"

Jeeeesus Christ...

More of 5️⃣0️⃣6️⃣: another call

Anderson, IN: not protest-related do not numbering it, but another recent example of unchecked police violence being normal everywhere

UPDATE + CORRECTION on 5️⃣0️⃣7️⃣ in New York City NY

➡️ This was in Brooklyn (apparently other boroughs also have a Franklin Avenue)

5️⃣2️⃣3️⃣ New York City, NY: a three-part sequence here

NYPD unions claimed three police officers were "intentionally poisoned" by Shake Shack employees...

...then you may have seen my retweets last night of @LesserFrederick pointing out this was almost certainly a lie...

...well, SURPRISE!

The police lied

They do this regularly

Desperate to be victims, shilling bullsh*t to the media and the public, and then getting exposed because people are noticing cops lie *a lot* about even minor sh*t

If NYPD cops will lie about something this small, what else will they flagrantly lie about? 🤔
Police lying about treatment by restaurants is common af:

➡️ NC: cops say a restaurant sang "F*ck the Police":

➡️ NJ: cops say someone wrote "PIG":

➡️ FL: cop says he was fed dirt:

Plus NJ cops assaulting a Domino's manager over late pizza:

And MO cops shooting a pizzeria owner, then asking people to harass him when he complains about being shot:

(Probably should change the saying to "Bad cop, no pizza" tbh)
I'd forgotten about this one! 😂

Tacoma, WA: pre-protest so not numbered

Back in March, four cops summarily executed Manuel Ellis. Police insisted no force was used, specifically denying Ellis was choked or tased despite the autopsy results

New bystander video proves the police lied

An in-depth review of the proto-fascist gibberish cops post on social media, with quite a few links to examples

Remember, these people are – in theory at least – your employees. They're supposed to work for you, not themselves

Richmond Hill, GA: not protest-related so not adding a number, but police are so detached from reality that they think McDonald's f*cking up their order is an Antifa murder plot 🙄

5️⃣3️⃣3️⃣ Oakland, CA: the Police Chief declares that his officers won't do the jobs they're paid by taxpayers to perform if elected officials ban them from using chemical weapons on citizens

5️⃣3️⃣5️⃣ St. Louis, MO: police have started posting one-day "emergency" no-parking signs in areas where parking is normally allowed

By undoubtedly pure coincidence, the signs are going up where protests are expected

Note: time/place/manner restrictions on speech have to be content-neutral. In instances like this, courts often will find they are not: they're content-based restrictions targeting disfavored protests

More on 4️⃣8️⃣0️⃣ in Atlanta GA: the cop who summarily executed Rayshard Brooks has a judicially-recognized history of being dirty

Miramar, CA: pre-protest so no number, but several folks DM'd me this from last year

A reminder that police don't protect and serve you, and will gladly use you as a human shield for a shootout on a busy highway to stop a stolen UPS truck

F*ck me 😑
