THREAD re Giuliani’s comments about this week’s protests:

Many of you may not be familiar with Andy Logan’s work. Andy was a fantastic @NewYorker reporter who covered City Hall for decades & I had the privilege of working with her for several years before she passed away. 1/
In 1992, Andy wrote an incredible column about a “police riot” against the David Dinkins Administration over the Mayor’s attempt to put in place a review board that would investigate police brutality incidents by the NYPD. 2/
In “Who Guards the Guards?” (available to subscribers only, sadly), Andy wrote about a riot by policemen in the thousands, which blocked traffic on Brooklyn Bridge. Nearly all of the police demonstrators that day were white. newyorker.com/magazine/1992/… 3/
News reporters captured police officers referring to Mayor Dinkins as a “washroom attendant” and commented on the use of the “n-word” by officers throughout the onslaught. It was, for all intents and purposes, a riot—against an attempt to review police brutality incidents. 4/
Guess who attended and spoke on behalf of the policemen’s riot that day? Mr. Giuliani, who listed a series of actions that Dinkins had mentioned to underscore his support of the police department, and, after each one, in a rousing speech, labeled them “Bullshit!” 5/
After the policemen’s dramatic demonstration, at least one organization urged the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate whether Giuliani should be investigated for inciting a riot. 6/
So the next time Mr. Giuliani comments on “lawless riots,” some enterprising journalist may want to ask him why he fully supported the police riot in 1992 & yet he seems to have so many issues with protesters this week questioning the murder of a black man in Minneapolis. 7/
