The fix for for a governmental institution that has utterly failed its mission is for the government to end the institution and replace it with something better, guided by citizens who have rethought their priorities.

I don't want a necessary evil.

I want a necessary good.
In my opinion fixing police means completely rethinking what police are, and should be.

The existing institution is unsalvageable. I say that not b/c I don't believe in democratic government, but b/c an inherently fascist institution is inherently incomparable with government.
We "need" police?

We need just laws. We need citizens protected from those who'd break just laws.

We don't have that now.

Think of how many times we "need" police because there is a social imbalance, and fixing it would be costly, and so we prefer to use violence to control.
Some of us, then, benefit from unjust social imbalance. We use violence to control it rather than pay the cost of fixing it.

Those of us currently unaffected by, even benefiting from, our present system, need to be willing to pay the cost

You want to fix this? Fix your spirit.
Fixing your spirit means believing things that should be different can be different, and you can help make them different.

Fixing your spirit means not believing in necessary evils.

Fixing your spirit means paying the cost.

Fix the spirit, fix the world.
We "need" police?

We certainly don't need what we have now. We have an institution that would wage war against our fellow citizens, our brothers and sisters.

On whose behalf? Mine. Yours, if you're white.

We "need" this? We don't. We allowed it. We need to end it.
Maybe, just maybe, police need to be people who would protected citizens from people powerful enough to flout the law—instead of the other way around.

Who used the systems of law instead of the power of the boot.

If we had that, then we'd know we had rethought the police.
