Starting a Monday #phillyprotest thread. I’m at police HQ again, where there are hundreds of people, maybe a thousand, here to protest with the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
The group is on the move, being escorted by dozens of police officers, as they chant “take it to the street and fuck the police.” They’re heading south on 6th street from Race. #phillyprotest
Expert juke move by this group, which just faked out police and cut up west on Market after appearing to continue south on 6th. It looks like police are doing everything they can to keep them from going to City Hall. We have our first blockade #phillyprotest
A man tried to break the line, I only caught the aftermath, and then police let the line break and now we’re heading west on Market toward City Hall. #phillyprotest
Two groups became one. #phillyprotest
Here’s the scope of the size here at the corner of 11th and Market. More people are flooding in. #phillyprotest
Just hit City Hall, where a full blown blockade with police and National Guard were waiting. North on Broad they go. Gotta be a thousand people or more in this group now, but I took algebra in senior year of high school so #phillyprotest
We’re at 16th and Race and it appeared as if a skirmish with one person and a cop resulted in this. It escalated fast. Some of the group is continuing north on 16th. #phillyprotest
Thought they might try to take it to 676, but they turned west on Vine. #phillyprotest
To the Parkway they go. #phillyprotest
They’ve reached 676. Traffic is stopped on both sides. People are still coming down the ramp. #phillyprotest
#phillyprotest
People keep streaming in. #phillyprotest
Tear gas. #phillyprotest
#phillyprotest
They just got us all pretty good. The parkway is a mess right now.
The Parkway is like a war zone. #phillyprotest
Here’s a view back down on 676, where multiple people have been arrested. #phillyprotest
To summarize: A very large group of people went onto 676 and the most menacing thing they did, other than stop traffic, is spray paint a wall.
Some people have regrouped and are now on the Parkway. #phillyprotest
The current scene #phillyprotest
#phillyprotest more spray
Back to the Parkway they go. Cameo from @jennamargaretta taking some photos #phillyprotest
Maybe it was pepper spray. Whatever. The point was the goddamn video
Still on the Parkway at 22nd now. #phillyprotest
#phillyprotest
It’s now past 6 p.m. in Philadelphia. Curfew is in effect. This group has stood and raised their hands. “Hands up, don’t shoot.” We’re still at 22nd and the Parkway. #phillyprotest
“Would you kneel with us if you weren’t in that uniform?”
Most of this crowd has dispersed and people are scattered about the Parkway. #phillyprotest
This guy is here at City Hall. #phillyprotest
The group of people here at City Hall is pretty small. A few dozen people right now. #phillyprotest
Appears as if bike cops around City Hall are starting to enforce curfew. I’m protecting @jennamargaretta’s things while she captures some images down the block.
Indeed, the area around City Hall is being cleared.
If it wasn’t obvious by this thread suddenly stopping, @jennamargaretta and I were detained in absurd fashion by police. We were leaving City Hall to go home and were stopped. We showed press badges. “I don’t believe you.” Then they put us in buses. Hi from the 22nd district.
The last thing I'll tweet tonight, besides responding to some of the many messages, is this: When the police bus pulled away from City Hall, someone yelled, "Are you ready kids?" And then the whole bus sang the Spongebob Squarepants song. Goodnight.
