/ On the eve of June 2nd primary elections in the District of Columbia, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and South Carolina, I'll be looking out for a number of things, including:
/ In-person voting. Because of the health risks inherent to in-person voting—which often requires standing in crowded lines and touching shared surfaces—there will likely be less of it than usual, but it still must be safe for pollworkers and voters. #Elections2020
/The expected surge in #VoteByMail (VBM). While VBM can minimize person to person contact and reduce spread of the virus, successful VBM elections are highly dependent on secure and accurate voter registration databases.
/Other alternatives to in-person voting that are being introduced, whether that's more early voting, additional drop boxes, or added curbside voting capability. #electionsecurity
/Election officials’ responses, more broadly, to the #coronavirus and whether they mitigated and/or created new vulnerabilities in the digital infrastructure that underpins elections. Even amid the ongoing pandemic, election security must remain a high priority.
/Other changes made in the run up to these primaries, such as expanding absentee voting, and how they are communicated to the public. If voters feel uncertain about what to do heading into an election tomorrow, they could be more vulnerable to dis or misinformation.
/ One way to limit the effectiveness of an attack, whether it be a disinformation operation or a cyberattack on infrastructure, is to conduct an election as planned. Hopefully, this will be the case tomorrow,
nothwithstanding of all the changes made in response to COVID-19.
