What is interesting about pieces like this by @ShankerASingham is that (like almost all calls for “deregulation”) they get interestingly vague about exactly what deregulation they are suggesting.
There’s a strong implication that he wants to relax rules on beef hormones (as inconsistent with “the science”), GMOs, and pesticides. But no details of those relaxations or any other details.
I don’t think that that vagueness is accidental. The devil with deregulation is in the detail. And when it comes to food safety (in the aftermath of a pandemic) and animal welfare, the detail will be hotly fought.
And one thing the pandemic has reminded us of is that claims that “following the science” gives us clear answers to what in the end are policy and value choices should be (and will be) viewed with some scepticism.
