Perhaps both sides are past caring about consequences and that's the news: not that people are partisan but that it's become a trial of strength.

It all comes down to November. One side is betting the farm Trump will lose, the other the reverse. In a way there's only one candidate: Trump and ~Trump. Biden is just a placeholder for ~Trump.
Trump for his part has replaced the term ~Trump with (China, More Lockdown, Antifa). So from his perspective the choice is Trump vs (China, More Lockdown, Antifa).
The Democrats would have had a much stronger hand if they had taken a modest stand against China, been less dogmatic about lockdown and kept Antifa at arm's lengh. But they couldn't because their leadership core had collapsed, leaving them open to the left.
If Trump wins in November it will be because the Dems were taken over by their left wing. This happened in the UK with Corbyn and Labour was slaughtered.

The best-laid plans of mice and men often go astray. The political lockdown narrative was intended to embarass the administration. It set off the blue cities instead. Now the riots are intended to hijack the Floyd protest. They'll wind up doing something else.

The kings of old sometimes kept wild beasts thinking even they would quail before their magnificence just as the sophisticates of the great blue cities felt safe supporting politicians spouting the most radical rhetoric.

Neither could not imagine anything would dare hurt them.
The great shock was that these radical politicians, humored because they were amusing or trendily shocking, weren't fake any more than the exotic pets the old kings had who sometimes bit them.
