BIG new proposal from Dublin City Council for traffic during and after COVID: changing the default speed limit for the city to 30kph.

THREAD: Image
1. All the documents for this are on this page for tomorrow's traffic policy committee meeting (3rd June). Item 5 here:

2. What would this mean? The big change is that 30kph is the DEFAULT across the city. So rather than there being zones of 30kph - it's 30 unless otherwise marked.
3. Where would this affect specifically?

These maps show. Everything light purple is currently 30kph.

Yellow lines are now 50k, proposed to go to 30k.

Dark purple lines are now 50k and would stay.

Green and orange would stay at 60k and 80k. ImageImageImage
4. Here's the full PDF map to look through. The main changes are the yellow lines (50kph to 30kph).

5. Big routes to see lower speeds?

North and south circulars. Routes along the canals. The quays. And large chunks of the roads currently classed as 50kph "arterial", but which are actually residential roads.
6. Obvious question: won't people break these?

a) Yes. We can work on enforcement. But it should still lower speeds.
b) It will also allow us to redesign roads in future. 30kph streets can have narrower lanes, wider footpaths. Less motorway-like interventions.
7. These documents are only just out. Take a look for yourself. Initial reading of them is really positive - especially for the SCR, canals, and the Bulfin/Inchicore area around my neck of the woods.

8. What's the process? I'm open to correction, but I understand that this will come before the transport strategic policy committee tomorrow (Wednesday 3rd) and then on for a vote from the full council after that.

Speed limit changes generally need a vote of full council, AFAIK.
9. Why cut speed limits?
- Lower carbon emissions
- Fewer people die in collisions
- Fewer collisions at all
- Less noise pollution
- Less air pollution
- Feels/is safer to cycle
- Feels/is safer to walk
- Gives you space to give more road space to walking, cycling, trees & more
