I encourage people who've never seen it before to check out the crowdsourced hkmap.live (@hkmaplive) for an example of how to help protesters and residents stay safe in the presence of aggressive police units. Apple banned it in Hong Kong; will they ban it in the US?
The map shows the following, fading the icons with time, based on crowdsourced reports:

- Large concentrations of police
- Road/transit closures
- Special riot police detachments
- Water cannon
- Active use of tear gas.

This is a good tech project to work on for American cities

Please stop doing the "DM for signal" thing when you're asking potential sources to take major career risks for you. Just publish a Signal number people can use directly. Let's not even mention the email part here.
How senior a reporter do you need to be at BuzzFeed before you stop having sensitive conversations on DM? Asking for a friend who takes a professional interest in these matters!
If you want timestamped, subpoenable, indelible proof that you contacted a reporter, then sure, DM for signal. Otherwise reach out to a reporter who takes your safety more seriously.

For those analyzing Steve King's defeat tonight, I hope they will give due credit to @JDScholten, who arrived in summer of 2017 as a political nobody and campaigned King into the ground in what should have been a solid red district. (Disclosure: I have fundraised for Scholten)
J.D. campaigned relentlessly in a district no one considered winnable. He did three full circuits of this huge district, holding town halls in every county, lived out of an R.V., and in the end came within 11,000 votes of unseating an incumbent who won by 80,000 votes in 2016
He did it when he had no money, and he did it when he was briefly a national media darling in the runup to the 2018 election. Instead of talking about King's many provocations, he stuck to how monopoly, misgovernment, and Trump's capricious trade wars were hurting Iowa farmers.

The implications of this finding are huge and haven't really made it into the public discussion of coronavirus. The pandemic spreads in a very specific way and is going to be much easier to stop than the outdated "herd immunity or vaccine" framing suggests. Hooray!
The protests, though, we're stuck with until we can break the back of white supremacy in America.
The upshot of the findings is that the fairly gentle Japanese tactics seem to work, and some combination of mask-wearing and avoiding prolonged periods in unventilated crowded indoor spaces will be enough to stop the pandemic in its tracks without the additional lockdown drama.
