In the spirit of #neverforget1984, a thread on the persecution and genocide that the Sikh and Hindu communities face in Afghanistan and the importance of never forgetting their plight, both current and past. 👇
We start with the terrorist attack on the Sikh Gurdwara in Kabul that occurred on March 25, 2020. In this attack that was planned and conducted by the Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISKP), this sacred gurdwara was desecrated and dozens of Sikhs were murdered or were injured.
Afghanistan has seen a steep drop in its Sikh & Hindu population due to such terror, militancy and religious discrimination. The ones who remain experience societal discrimination and terrorist attacks routinely, including a 2018 attack that killed 19 Afghan Sikhs & Hindus.
For those that have sought refuge in India, the CAA passed last year by the Indian Parliament has provided them with citizenship. Similar efforts are being made in the United States & Canada where political leaders, including @JoeBiden, have called for providing refuge to them.
For those in the US & Canada who want to advocate for providing refuge to these people in their countries, we direct you to the WSO (@WorldSikhOrg) and the Hindu American Foundation (@HinduAmerican) guides on how to do that. 👇
