There is a middle-ground between "just a flu" and the position that the Covid numbers justify the extreme measure of shutting down the entire economy and sending tens of millions of people into unemployment, and the full consequences thereof.
There are related questions such as whether New York's severe situation justifies holding the entire country hostage. An urban/rural element.

And, furthermore, whether the lockdown measures (which aren't a real quarantine) are even that helpful to stop spread.
Indeed, it is quite possible that the half-measure lockdown in place in much of America combines the worst elements of the real quarantine with the worst elements of the herd immunity strategy

This fascinating cartoon reminds me of a legendary anecdote involving the British mathematician G.H. Hardy and the Mathematical sorcerer of Madras, Srinivasa Ramanujan...
Ramanujan had fallen into poor health, possibly on account of poor acclimation to the Cambridge climate.

But more likely as a result of excessive communion with the great Namagiri நாமகிரித்தாயார் who had been, as it were, Ramanujan's mathematical Diotima.
Whatever the case may be, Ramanujan was sick in bed when G.H. Hardy came to visit him.

They were having a hearty laugh at a low ranked college in America called Goucher.

I find the cancellation gotcha games silly, gauche, and (if you’ll pardon) campy.

However these are rules: and what’s more interesting than first order “offense” here is the state of exception.

Why is this allegedly right wing Harvard professor not cancelled over camp talk?
Is it simply that lacking charisma and force of personality he is considered harmless, or is there some tacit understanding.
