NEW: a senior Justice Department official brushed off concerns about having anonymous federal law enforcement officers who won’t even identify their agency on the streets of D.C. huffpost.com/entry/william-…
The official credits Barr with coming up with the idea of putting federal prison riot officers on D.C. streets. Said it was an example of his “outside the box” thinking. huffpost.com/entry/william-…
I sent BOP a photo of the line to see if they’d confirm they were with BOP. “We cannot verify the individuals in the photos you referenced. For safety and security reasons, we are not providing more specific information about law enforcement operations.” huffpost.com/entry/william-…
DOJ’s former watchdog told me it’s a huge problem.

“It completely undermines the ability to hold law enforcement personnel who engage in misconduct accountable. You’ve got to know who they are, and certainly which agency they represent.” huffpost.com/entry/william-…
A senior DOJ official said it’s not a big deal if anonymous federal law enforcement officials refuse to even identify their agency. huffpost.com/entry/william-…
DOJ report a few years ago: removing nameplates defeats “an essential level of on-scene accountability that is fundamental to the perception of procedural justice and legitimacy.”

DOJ now:
.@Christy_E_Lopez says the feds “are acting akin to the bystander officers in Minneapolis: aligning themselves with those who would commit and conceal police abuse rather than sending a clear message to the public and to their own officers...” huffpost.com/entry/william-…
“The risk of using excessive force is that you’ll be accused of it and that it will be sustained and it will be punished.”

“That risk seems to have been removed.”

Some of the BOP officers on the streets of DC are reportedly from a federal prison with a huge COVID-19 outbreak.
Video I shot of one of the police lines near the White House early this afternoon:
.@Piper, who we’ll call a source familiar with Bureau of Prisons operations, also thinks this is a terrible idea.
Didn’t get into detail in the piece, but the BOP also has (like almost all law enforcement organizations) a troubled internal affairs system.

Say you’re a civilian with a complaint. So you use a complaint process designed for prisoners? huffpost.com/entry/epstein-…
