Yesterday, President Trump nominated commissioner Hester Peirce to a second term on the SEC.

Very few outlets reported on it, so it may not be obvious that this is a VERY big deal

Traditionally, nominations to boards with a mandated partisan balance have been advanced in pairs, one Democrat and one Republican

And, as it happens there is presently a Democratic vacancy on the SEC.

But Peirce’s nomination was presented alone, with no accompanying nomination for the Democratic slot (which has been sitting empty since February).

If Peirce is confirmed, her second term will not expire until 2025 and she would not be required to leave her seat until December 2026!

Even more importantly, with a solid majority on the SEC assured, Mitch McConnell will have no reason to fill the Democratic slot if Biden is elected and Republicans hang on to the majority.

That is because, if Senate Republicans do absolutely nothing, Republicans will not lose their majority on the commission until 2024!

The consequences of Senate Democrats surrender in this fight will not simply disappear the moment that Trump leaves office but will linger for years to come, limiting a hypothetical Biden administration's ability to undo what Trump and his cronies have wrought.

With the help of @demandprogress we've done our best to draw attention to this attack, but it's time that Senate Democrats acted.

Some of the damage may already be done, but concerted effort now could prevent even worse from occurring in the coming months
