Looks like these are coming in progressively, so this is just a sampling for now.
Worth remembering that the founding documents of Sputnik's parent company state its purpose is "securing the national interests of the Russian Federation in the information sphere."

It's going to be interesting to see how many of these outlets challenge the decision.
There are rules for proving independence, and an appeals process, so this will definitely be one to watch - especially if some of the outlets decide to go public with their positions.

THREAD: State voices in China, Iran & Russia are posting on the US protests to support their own narratives.

It’s primarily about discrediting the US abroad.

No evidence of IRA-style covert, divisive activity at this stage.

Take China. Even before George Floyd was killed, Chinese state editorials accused the US of “hypocrisy” for criticizing China’s crackdown law on Hong Kong.

“Not even the US would sit idle should one of its cities be threatened by such mob violence.”

THREAD: catching up, but when dramatic stories about social-media manipulation break, it's really important to *calm down and look at the evidence*.

Here’s why.

1: The "bots" claim was based on an article based on a press release.

As many experts have pointed out, there’s no evidence that we can replicate.

But *evidence is everything*.

This claim should have been substantiated before it was reported.

2: There’s a huge amount of complexity and nuance to the global conversation around Covid-19. My colleagues at @Graphika_NYC have been mapping it for months.

E.g. did you know that the US right wing saw its share of the conversation *fall* in March?

Refreshingly different story today. The @WhiteHouse Instagram account full of Russian posts.

They call it “the siege of the White House”, but it doesn’t look like a troll operation, more like coordinated authentic behaviour.

H/t @asebenius of @business for the tip.
As @wiczipedia rightly deduced, it starts with this post on May 8. The White House commemorates the victory of “America and Great Britain over the Nazis”.

Nice of them to include the UK. Shame about all the other Allies…
… notably the USSR, which took far higher casualties than anyone else, and fought battles like Stalingrad and Kursk.

Whatever you think of the USSR, it’s hard to find someone in Russia who +didn’t+ have kin who fought. It’s personal.
