We are not obliged to humor bad faith propaganda. So let's be clear: Tom Cotton and Trump want you to see the *protests themselves* as a fundamentally dangerous, destructive force. But they're failing: Three new polls show they're losing the argument.

Cotton and Trump claim to respect protests. But to pretend the story ends there -- to pretend they aren't trying to create a profoundly distortive overall picture, while maintaining plausible deniability for doing so -- is to allow bad faith to triumph:

Amazingly, Trump tweeted "LAW & ORDER!" literally minutes after corruptly dangling a pardon for Roger Stone. This makes an utter mockery of rule of law. In so doing, Trump neatly confirmed that James Mattis' blistering criticism is 100% right. New piece:

The only response Trump can muster to Mattis' criticism is belittlement and manufactured illusions of domination.

He's incapable of defending himself against the criticism that he's betraying our higher ideals, because he doesn't have any.

It's key that Mattis blasted the *specific* crackdown on protesters that enabled Trump's authoritarian set piece.

Trump's advisers saw that as a triumph: Trump striding through a militarily pacified zone, posing as righteous conqueror of civil disorder.

A majority of *whites* (52%) now see racial discrimination against blacks in how police use force, up from 36% four years ago.

Good morning. The president is telling us we're under assault by "domestic terrorists" while threatening to send troops into US cities. Shouldn't Congress be demanding that top officials *justify* such extraordinary claims and threats? New piece:

Trump is shaping his response to multiple crises rocking the country around demented rage over looking weak.

His team is treating his Bible photo op as a triumph, even though it came after a violent crackdown on peaceful protests. That says it all.
