Um, so, this should be obvious but... YOU DO NOT GET TO DECIDE WHO IS BLACK AND WHO IS NOT.

This person is a racist troll but, unless you’re Black, you may not have noticed how often a person’s Blackness gets called into question.

A thread... @brian_armstrong on Twitter says: I want to unequivocally say that Black Lives Matter.<br />
<br />
@HeyTaiZen says: If black lives matter then they should go into the ghettos in America and protest the black people killing black people. They can start in Chicago.@HeyTaiZen on Twitter says: ‪You ever live in the ghetto around black people before?‬<br />
<br />
‪I have lived around more black people in my life than most black people in america and I'm not falling for that dumb nonsense that white police purposely go out and kill more minorities.‬<br />
<br />
@tweetmonster999 says: ‪Yes I have..... First off. I AM BLACK. My FAMILY is black. So many of my FRIENDS are black. I'm not sure where you're getting at with this one making that statement to a BLACK person lol.‬@HeyTaiZen on Twitter says: You might have dark skin but you ain't a real
‪I have lived around real black people most of my life and they don't think that nonsense like u do.‬

‪If u understand an ounce of the "struggles" of real black people u would instantly see through the BLM bullshit. ‬" src="/images/1px.png" data-src="https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EZx3wu5WsAAyxc8.jpg">
Growing up, this was part of my daily life.

“You’re not like OTHER Black people.”

“You’re not ghetto.”

“How’d you get so smart?”

“You’re so articulate.”

“You don’t act Black.”

“You’re like an Oreo! White on the inside, Black on the outside!”
I shouldn’t need to tell grown ass adults how fucked up this is. There is no one way to “act Black” and there’s no one way to “look Black”. And to try and tell a Black person about their own Blackness is, frankly, disgusting.
Take, for example, Gumroad’s recent debacle. The short version is that they made what appeared to be an opportunistic grab for more Black customers w/o removing racist creators from their platform. When two Black women called them out, the founder got defensive and blocked them.
IN ADDITION, that same founder, using the Gumroad account, went on to question another woman’s Blackness. The tweet and all its outraged replies have been deleted but it was short enough to remember verbatim. When she attempted to claim her Pro account, he said “Are you sure?”
The most heartbreaking part of this, for me, was that this woman then felt the need to justify herself in that space. Replying to @gumroad: Ahh, I should probably change that old profile pic on Gumroad. I’m black, mixed Jamaica, Mauritius and British.
She has nothing to explain, nothing to apologize for. Part of what’s so beautiful about Black people is our diversity (though colorism is very much a thing and I benefit from it). We have SO MANY gorgeous skin tones and hair textures.
I got this shit when I was younger as well.

“Are you really Black?”

“Just Black?”

“No, what else are you mixed with?”

“Where are you from?”

“Where are you REALLY from?”

“Where’s your family from?”

“Are you Dominican?”

“Where’d you get your weave?” (about my natural hair)
Do yourself and everyone else a favor. Do not comment on others’ appearance without their consent. It’s not difficult. It costs you nothing to keep your mouth shut.
