It is striking how weak this column's effort is to show that the Cotton piece was "lies." Its entire premise is that there was no significant rioting, looting, or arson - yet admits, "Recent days have been marked by looting and violence."

1. The alternative to the police is armed vigilantes. We've had that quite a few times in our history. It has not typically worked out well for black Americans in particular.
2. San Francisco was taken over by armed vigilantes in 1851 & 1856. In 1856, the forces of law & order turned to a banker & ex-Army officer running the state militia: William Tecumseh Sherman. He proposed an overwhelming show of force to back them down.
3. The War Department, then run by Jefferson Davis, refused to back Sherman up; they said the Army could only protect federal facilities (not Davis' stance 5 yrs later). Refused support, Sherman resigned in disgust, resolved to have nothing to do with politics again.

1. Ahistorical nonsense. The Second Amendment derived from the English Bill of Rights of 1689, which explicitly placed a right to bear arms among the traditional rights of Englishmen. The right was recognized in antislavery northern state constitutions. nationalreview.com/2018/05/second…
2. Also, the claim that the militia was a non-factor in the Revolution is nonsense. Yes, militia was unable to act as a substitute for the Continental Army. But it was an essential force multiplier, without which the war would not have been won. baseballcrank.com/archives2/2013…
3. You can tell that Professor Bogus op-ed is up to no good when it kicks off "The story begins in June of 1788." Also, this is misleading - compare to Sec 12 of Mason's draft (Sec 13 as adopted) virginiamemory.com/docs/VADeclara… & archives.gov/founding-docs/…

A Harvard education just isn't what it used to be.
I still don't understand what makes people want to advertise their own stupidity with arguments like "Churchill would be a masked anarchist burning down stores today."
Nobody but nobody was more anti-fascist than Winston Churchill, but he was also a deeply conservative figure who favored public order & immediately pivoted after *both* World Wars to opposing Communism.
