Since you love mansplaining @ScottMorrisonMP, I thought I’d borrow your vibe and mansplain to you why your #RenoRort ‘stimulus’ is not a stimulus and is instead a wasteful joke of a policy akin to pouring public money down the drain. A thread👇🏻
You’ve made sure only people who qualify for this money are those who were already planning renovations or new builds. They have to already have cash there or have borrowed from the bank. They have to be ready to start in next 9 months. You’re just topping up existing projects.
Let me explain it really simply. You’re topping up projects that were already planned. This means you are NOT STIMULATING THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR. The builders were already getting the work. You’re just gifting public money to people who don’t need it.
As someone who has done major renovations to my home twice (my sister @catrollison is a builder), I know a project doesn’t get off the ground quickly. If I decided today to do a major reno because of your plan (unlikely) there’s a long process to go through before building.
Worries me that I have to point this out, but here goes. First you need to decide what you’re going to build. That takes time. Then you need to get plans designed - either an architect or a drafter. Takes time. Then you need to go through council. That takes months.
This is just for a reno. What about for a new build? First I have to buy the land. (If I have already bought the land, you’re not stimulating anything because I already planned to build a house on the land I bought). Takes time to find land. Then have to put offer in. Then settle
This whole process takes months if you’re lucky. Maybe more than a year if you also add loan application process. No one wakes up today and starts building a house within 9 months IF THEY WEREN’T WELL ALONG THIS PROCESS ALREADY.
So I’ll once again reiterate in case you still don’t understand, that if you’ve already planned to build a house, $25k from the government doesn’t stimulate anything - doesn’t create one job, doesn’t put one extra cent into a builders’ pocket unless he inflated the price by $25k.
Let’s look at people using $25k to buy an apartment off the plan. Either the apartment building is already being planned - so builder already engaged, or if someone thought they could sell apartments just because of your program, no way they’ll be ready to go within 9 months.
So, as you can see, when you also add in the fact that you’ve means tested this program (which I’m glad you did, but would prefer you didn’t do it in the first place), it’s nothing but a waste of everyone’s time and money. Yes Scott, that’s our money. Not yours. Public money.
You’ve designed this program as a PR stunt, not as a viable stimulus. It won’t create jobs. It won’t create work for tradies. It won’t encourage anyone to renovate or build who weren’t doing so already. So what is the point other than a bribe, a gift to those who need it least?
What could you do with that money (you’d need more than you’ve said to really stimulate) which WOULD create construction jobs? Well you could invest in school buildings! See what I did there? You could build and do maintenance on public housing!
These are projects that would create jobs BECAUSE THEY WEREN’T GOING TO HAPPEN WITHOUT THE STIMULUS MONEY!!! I’m no expert on all of this, just a lay person who can think logically and can therefore see your program is not a stimulus program.
Last thing. Why the focus on a male dominated industry when female workers are harder hit by covid unemployment? Why not come up with creative ways to solve unemployment amongst casuals? What about arts and entertainment stimulus? What about retail? What about higher ed?
So there you have it. It’s all on the historical record now. We told you the stimulus was never going to work. But you knew that didn’t you Scott. Smirking away doing your sly marketing. You know your program is just a middle class bribe, a total waste. That’s the point isn’t it.
You had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the ideological idea of stimulating the economy, and even once you finally got there, you couldn’t help but do it the Liberal way - using govt to benefit the rich and screw everyone else. #ThanksForNothingScott. End.
Postscript: was just sent this builder proposal via DM. Source said builder followed up proposal with a phone call offering $25,000 cash back if they signed up to a project. You going to investigate this @ScottMorrisonMP? How are you going to stop rorts galore?
