The other thing I want to point out to many Black creatives that are being approached right now is that many of you will be the only black person hired to work on large projects. Do NOT be afraid to point out that you will need an assistant, researcher, writer, producer, etc. and
to work that into your budget. Then hire freelancers to help you. #HighlanderSyndrome
And don’t forget, “Highlander Syndrome” when it comes to diversity in creative spaces still exists. Establish support systems outside of your office or discipline so you won’t go crazy dealing with being alone. #HighlanderSyndrome
Freelance Black creatives, you will be hired to work on a project and then asked to suggest other black creatives to work with. Absolutely give names so that more black and brown folks can get work. But be prepared to work with that company less. #HighlanderSyndrome
It still happens to me. But DON’T PANIC. The myth is there’s not enough work to go around. But as we’ve seen in the past month many of us can work remotely, and there are A LOT more companies and outlets willing to hire than you thought. #HighlanderSyndrome
Fight that feeling that you need to drag another brother or sister down in order to secure a position or a project. Fight that feeling that you shouldn’t self-promote and get your reel, press kit, press release or website together. #HighlanderSyndrome
