Kalief Browder died 5 years ago today. He spent 3 years on Rikers Island waiting for trial on charges that were eventually dismissed because he could not afford bail.

In the middle of an uprising against massive racial injustice, @NYGovCuomo wants to go back to that system.
He is specifically asking District Attorneys to charge people arrested for property crimes - "looting" - with Burglary in the Second Degree, so that bail can be set.

Prosecutors, who routinely overcharge cases, have come out and said that to do that would be unethical.
The NY State DA's Association issued this statement: "Any suggestion that prosecutors should knowingly charge an offense that the facts and circumstances do not support .. would run afoul of the ethical obligations prosecutors are sworn to uphold."

I mean let's not get it twisted and think prosecutors are on the side of righteousness. @ManhattanDA wants to be able to hold people in jail on the lesser charge of Burglary in the Third Degree, he just can't do that under current law. newyork.cbslocal.com/2020/06/03/new…
Point being, mainstream media or anyone else holding up @NYGovCuomo as a criminal justice reformer, or NYC DAs as progressive, need to rethink that narrative.

They are actually trying to rollback the very little amount of change that has been made in the last couple of years.
