Happening now: following NYC officials @bradlander, @JumaaneWilliams and @KeithPowersNYC as they attempt to access holding cells in Manhattan — legal advocates say many of 2,500 people arrested in the last week are disappearing in a system rife with unsafe conditions
.@bradlander is knocking on the backdoor here at 100 Centre Street — no answer. Officials are invoking a city charter that empowers them to inspect jail cells
Officials at the front of the building told lawmakers to try the back, officials at the back told them to go to the front.

@JumaaneWilliams gave the NYPD commissioner advance notice that they would be conducting this inspection.
No luck here either.
Now being told we will be allowed access to NYPD’s detention facilities — unclear if access to 100 Centre will be granted because it’s under BOP jurisdiction and it seems they have yet to approve
Now at the base of NYPD headquarters waiting for the chief.
NYPD chief Royster has informed @JumaaneWilliams, @bradlander and @KeithPowersNYC that the will be allowed inside 1PP — no phones, no pictures, no recording.

Everyone else, including me, the only member of the media currently here, is being kept outside.
The local lawmakers have emerged from 1PP, there was nobody in there.

Their message: NYPD needs to release a lot more info on how protest processing is working.

Advocates and lawyers who were waiting outside are frustrated, demanding commitments to meaningful defunding.
Rode back into Brooklyn and smack dab into an enormous march — kind of the constant state of things in New York City right now
A speech, beginning with a conversation about the life and death of Kalief Browder
Thousands of protesters streaming over the Brooklyn Bridge right now. This contingent was singing.

People at the base of the bridge are collecting trash, urging people to vote and telling them not to talk to the cops.
Lower Manhattan is boarded up, there are tens of thousands of protesters in the streets in multiple marches, and there are these guys
A collection of names in Manhattan.

“It’s a damn shame,” a woman said as she passed by.

Made me think of @eji_org’s memorial in Montgomery.
Anti-fascist NYC soccer crew.
“Fuck your curfew” and “we will win” chants have started. It’s 8.
Lower Manhattan right now.
Going strong headed south towards the Williamsburg bridge
Protesters marching on as a train passes overhead.
