If any public-spirited billionaire out there is wondering how they can leave a legacy in America, consider buying newspaper chains and empowering non-profit trusts of journalists to run them

I'm open to other alternatives, but I don't see or hear of any. And if somebody doesn't rescue Gannett, McClatchy, Newhouse etc soon, it's going to be gut punch to journalism and democracy.
You know who feels nearly as strongly about this as reporters? Political operatives in both parties. They know democracy and campaigns don't work without local papers.

Don is a high-profile surrogate for his dad’s campaign and has also appeared at events on behalf of a number of Republican lawmakers
The president’s eldest son is associated w the family’s real estate business.

But he spends much of his time on politics and for months has been targeting Biden, often suggesting the former VP has dementia.

It’s like his dad throwing out daily claims of felony and corruption, Don does this stuff so routinely it’s barely noticed.

Whereas if George W Bush in ‘92 or Karenna Gore in ‘00 associated their dads’ opponents w pedophila it would be a week-long story.
