Today is Vaigasi Moolam. #Gurupoojai (day of mukthi) of 4 of the 63 Nayanmars - #Thirugnanasambar, #MurugaNayanar, #Thiruneelanakkar, #ThiruneelakandaYazhpanar. How did 4 Nayanmars attain mukthi on the same day? What is the story behind this? A thread
Gnanasambandar was the son of Sivapaadha Irudaiyar in Sirkali. When he was about 3, he saw his father going to the temple tank to offer his oblutions. The child followed him crying. His father made him sit on the steps as he immersed himself in the water to perform his duties.
Not seeing his father, the child looked up to the temple tower and cried “Amme! Appa”. On hearing the child's piteous call, Mother Goddess Parvathy offered him divine milk in a golden bowl and fed the child. The child stopped crying.
When his father came out of the water, he saw the child with the golden bowl in his hand and milk in his mouth. The angry father asked the child who had given him milk. The child pointed to the Lord and started singing “Thodudaiya Seviyan” - the ardhanari version of the Lord!
Thirugnanasambandar - the child who was given milk of divine by none other than Goddess Parvati Herself, went on to become a devotee of Lord Shiva, one of the Naalvars (the other 3 being Appar, Sundarar and Manikkavasagar) and sang numerous songs in praise of the Lord.
Among Sambandar's most famous songs are the "Thiruneetrupathigam" - which has the famous lines, Mandiramaavathu Neeru (on the sanctity & power of the Holy Ash) & also "Kolaru Pathigam", which was used as the scripture to usher in democracy in India (separate thread later on this)
One of the notable miracles performed by Thirugnanasambandar was the bringing back to life of Poompavai, daughter of Sivanesan chettiar, a wealthy merchant of Mylapore. Sivanesan had cherished a desire of getting her married to Sambandar, but she was bitten by a snake and died.
After cremating Poompavai, Sivanesan Chettiar did not lose hope (such was his faith) & stored her ashes & bones in a pot. When he heard Sambandar was coming to Tiruvotriyur, he invited him to Mylapore. Sambandar sang the #Poompavai Pathigam bringing the girl back to life
When Sivanesa Chettiar requested Sambandar to marry Poompavai, the latter refused. He was now a parent to her, having raised her back to life from ashes! This scene is beautifully depicted in the Kapaleeswara Temple. The Poompavai Pathigam mentions all festivities of Mylapore!
In the meantime, Sivapadha Irudhaiyar had arranged for Sambandar’s marriage with the daughter of Nambiandar Nambi of Thirunallur. On the day of the wedding, Sambandar sought to attain the holy feet of the Lord along with his wife. He sang the famous #NamachivayaPathigam
The Lord opened an all-encompassing light portal, & invited Sambandar, his wife and all those who attended the wedding, to enter it and attain mukthi. The guests who were invited to Sambandar's wedding included Muruga Nayanar, Thiruneelakanta Yazhpanar and Thiruneelanakkar
Periyapuranam (by Sekkizhar) states that even as the guests entered the portal and attained mukthi, Goddess Parvathi ushered those who were frightful, by showing them the bliss of Sivaloka! Finally, Sambandar held his wife’s hand, entered the portal & attained moksha!
