If we judge history by the mores of our time, there will be no more statues to pull down
Some are wondering why the difference is between removing the Colston statue and this…
One is judged by the mores of his own time, the other is not.
One was removed by the selfsame people who decided to honour him in the first place, the other was removed by a mob without any authority to do so.
Whilst few of us will shed any tears over a slave trader, it is historically illiterate to judge him by the mores of our time because we would have to have such a view of the overwhelming majority of people who existed in the West in the 16th and 17th centuries otherwise
Those who pull this statue down will be looking to pull down Churchill's next because he subscribed to eugenics. Cromwell's will be up for removal. Before long, there will be no statues left because those who went before us rarely share our moral outlook or framework
The only statues left will be those we deem acceptable by our own standards. We are fools if we think they will remain in future generations. It is the height of arrogance to assume our moral views will necessarily outlast our era so that our own statues come tumbling down
