It's June 2006, my 1st week hosting the @CBCOttawa drive home show. A dream job. My 1st permanent gig. I'm back in my hometown. A respected journalist in the newsroom says to my face I'm a token. I'm paralyzed. I say nothing. I vow that'll never happen again. #BlackintheNewsroom
The point of posting this is not to elicit sympathy. Rather it's to seize this moment & speak clearly about the systemic issues that plague Canadian institutions. It's only by sharing these stories that have been buried for years that we can make the fundamental changes required.
We need to hold all of our media organizations to account. From the top down. They need to be as transparent as they demand of other institutions. We need to know who is being hired and promoted at every level. It's time that power be shared. Whistleblowers must be protected.
