To those rising up and speaking out, marching and protesting, demanding accountability and fighting for justice: YOU have caused urgent action in Congress.

I am proud to help introduce the Justice in Policing Act on your behalf. RT to share8⃣things people should know about it ⬇
1⃣It not only bans chokeholds like the one used to murder George Floyd, but it establishes them as a civil rights violation too.

It also bans no-knock warrants for drug cases like the one that was used when officers murdered Breonna Taylor, shooting her at least eight times.
2⃣It finally classifies lynching as a federal hate crime in the United States. We know that this is long overdue but it is also urgently necessary today as we just witnessed the modern-day lynching of Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia.
3⃣It establishes a federal police misconduct registry that is public and tracks complaints at the local, state, and federal level.

This increases accountability and transparency while ensuring past misconduct can be detected when an officer is trying to transfer departments.
4⃣It finally ends qualified immunity.

This ensures that we are able to hold accountable police officers and members of law enforcement who perpetrate violence, murders, and injustices—no matter what badge they wear.
5⃣It requires the reporting of ALL incidents of use of force against a civilian to the Justice Department and mandates that demographic data and an explanation of the incident are included too.

It also collects data on law enforcement practices such as stops and searches.
6⃣This bill allows prosecutors to hold officers accountable for the deprivation of civil rights AND civil liberties by changing the mens rea requirement from “willful” to “knowingly or with reckless disregard”.

This improves accountability for police brutality and misconduct.
7⃣It gives DOJ the power to subpoena law enforcement departments for pattern and practice investigations, which allows them to hold accountable agencies who violate the constitution or other federal laws.

It also establishes a National Task Force on Law Enforcement Oversight.
8⃣It works to END the militarization of law enforcement by restricting the program that allows military equipment to transfer to local departments.

It also requires federal, state, and local law enforcement to use existing federal funds to ensure the use of police body cameras.
This legislation is a bold step towards justice and accountability. I'll fight to swiftly move it though Congress.

We need everyone across the country to continue building the public pressure necessary to get this approved by the House, passed in the Senate and signed into law.

Yesterday, Trump signed an executive order banning transgender women from competing in sports at federally-funded schools.

This is a cruel, invasive action that will harm women and girls across the country. Let’s talk about it.🧵
Categorical bans like this one harm all women and girls and are incredibly invasive to implement.

How do you verify “reproductive biology?” If a young girl doesn’t look feminine enough, is she subject to examination? I don’t think any of us are okay with that.
The NCAA President — a former GOP governor — said that out of 500,000 NCAA athletes, he was aware of less than 10 that were trans.

Trump and Republicans are picking out a tiny portion of the population, vilifying them, and stoking fear. That’s dangerous and has real consequences.

It has been 53 days since Aysenur Ezgi Eygi was killed in the West Bank, and we have seen no movement toward an independent investigation by the U.S. government. The U.S. is the largest backer of military assistance to Israel. 🧵
If the Israeli government is unwilling or unable to follow our own domestic laws as well as international humanitarian laws, we must demand accountability.
To ensure the trust of our own U.S. citizens, we must initiate our own investigation into Eygi’s killing, use our leverage to demand changes to the IDF’s rules of engagement, and apply our domestic laws to this situation for full accountability.

One of the most cruel and extreme portions of Trump’s Project 2025 is his plan for mass deportations — a scheme to build detention camps and rip apart millions of families. It’s unconscionable.

Let’s talk about it. 🧵
This plan is inhumane. It would tear apart communities across the country, take parents away from their U.S. citizen kids, and remove children from classrooms.

But it would also be bad for America — for our tax system, for our government programs, and for our economy as a whole.
Let’s begin with the actual process of deporting millions of individuals — a process that Trump has given zero specifics about.

If it were to happen, removing America’s undocumented population would be incredibly harmful and costly.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has been a destructive force and a barrier to peace. Instead of attending his address, I spent time meeting with hostage families and listening to Palestinian and Israeli Jewish activists who are working together for peace and security in the Middle East.
We had real conversations about how to end this conflict — no divisive and politicized rhetoric like Netanyahu, just important and productive discussions.
First, at a moving event, I met with hostage families and heard the deep pain they are experiencing. They spoke about wanting “life over revenge” and expressed anger and frustration that Netanyahu has not prioritized the return of the hostages, but instead has sabotaged a deal.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: @POTUS is the most progressive president on domestic economic policy that we have ever had. Last night in his interview, he showed us that once again.

Let’s run through some of the major things that he and Democrats have accomplished.🧵
President Biden has been THE jobs president! Well over 15 million jobs have been created since he took office and unemployment has now been below 4% for a record 27 months in a row. We’ve also seen over 16 million new business applications. The Biden Economy is delivering.
.@POTUS has also taken on junk fees, requiring companies to show full prices upfront and capping fees from credit cards, live event tickets, auto dealers, apartment rentals, and more — saving Americans BILLIONS.

🧵1. What happened yesterday at @KCCouncil when asylum seekers showed up to testify about how they would be w/o a place to sleep in one of the richest areas in the country was extraordinary. Councilmembers Perry, Mosqueda, Baron, Zahilay welcomed them & ensured they cld speak.
2. After everyone had spoken but asylum seekers were not leaving b/c they had nowhere to sleep that night, council members began calling around to help fill the 2-week gap before county money could get disbursed. Perry called Muslim leader Mubarak El-Amin as one of her calls.
3. Mubarak immediately jumped into action. He is former board member of @weareoneamerica when I was ED, immigrant from Sudan who understands displacement (read more about Sudan & his own story here (), & Muslim leader in pain w/what is happening in Gaza.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/w…
