We read the #JusticeInPolicing Act as proposed by Senators Booker and Harris. Here is what it does and why we support it (1/12):
The act would enable individuals to recover damages when law enforcement officers violate their constitutional rights, which would open the door for individuals to hold their law enforcement accountable. (2/12)
The act would grant subpoena power to the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, to conduct pattern and practice investigations and provide grants to state attorneys general to conduct pattern and practice investigations. (3/12)
The act would create a grant program for state attorneys general to create an independent investigation process for law enforcement misconduct or excessive use of force so that law enforcement can be held accountable for their actions. (4/12)
The act would require the attorney general to create law enforcement accreditation standard recommendations based on President Obama’s Taskforce on 21st Century Policing so that law enforcement is held to a greater standard. (5/12)
The act would create a federal registry of all federal, state and local law enforcement officers that compiles:
- Misconduct Complaints (Pending, Sustained and Exonerated)
- Discipline records
- Termination records
- Records of certification (6/12)
The act would mandate law enforcement provide training on racial, religious, and discriminatory profiling and condition federal funding to state and local law enforcement to adopt policies to combat racial, religious, and discriminatory profiling. (7/12)
The act would ban no-knock warrants in drug cases at the federal level so that individual's Constitutional rights are protected. (8/12)
The act would ban the use of chokeholds and carotid holds so that we never lose another life to this method of excessive force. (9/12)
The act would limit the transfer of military-grade equipment to state and local law enforcement to reduce militarization in law enforcement (10/12)
The act requires federal uniformed police officers to wear body cameras and marked federal police vehicles to have dashboard cameras. Additonally, it would ensure that law enforcement actually uses body cameras and dashboard cameras. (11/12)
Finally, the act would make it a federal crime to conspire to violate existing hate crimes laws so that lynching is finally deemed a federal crime. (12/12)
Senators Booker and Harris have done great work in this bill to help immediately address key issues in our law enforcement as it stands now. This act is just the first step forward in addressing systemic racism and we hope that our followers contact their Reps about it!
